FISCO IR Ltd. announced today that it will launch a diagnostic service for European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) guidelines on July 1, 2018. The service is based on GDPR Guidebook, written by Teruyoshi Adachi and Dr. Hermann Gumpp and published by Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, Ltd. (Only Japanese version available)
The GDPR is a regulation of the European Economic Area (EEA), including the European Union, in which companies, etc. are required to adopt strict management and security measures and obligated to respond to requests for amendments or deletion of data when personal information is processed or transferred outside of the region. The regulation imposes enormous fines on companies, etc. violating its provisions. The regulation also applies to handling of personal information of residents of the EEA even if an organization does not have a base in the EEA.
FISCO IR has been investigating the GDPR’s impact on corporate management since formulation of the regulation in May 2016 and decided to publish the guidebook on May 25, 2018, the start of enforcement of the GDPR, including its administrative penalties. In publishing the guidebook, FISCO IR COO and FISCO Financial Review Editor Hiroki Nakagawa provided full cooperation in determining the impact on corporate management.
Since the enactment of the Act on the Protection of Personal Information in Japan, the handling of personal information has become a crucial component of corporate management. There are increasing examples of how the way personal information is handled can greatly damage corporate value. FISCO IR sees the adoption of the GDPR not merely as responding to obligations for global corporations operating in Europe, but as an opportunity to encourage trust and improve corporate value with the appropriate processing and management of personal information.
FISCO IR wants to provide an information base to deepen essential discussions with all parties involved in corporations on how the handling of personal information can be tied to enhancing corporate value through addressing the GDPR going forward.
The following is an array of the services planned for the future:
